Restoration Planning and Techniques for Forested Lands

Locations vary - courses have been held at Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve (Bristol), Austin Cary Forest (near Gainesville), Natures Classroom (Hillsborough County)

Learn best management practices for restoring ecological processes to forested lands.  The workshop focuses on the primary forested lands of the region of Florida where the workshop is held.  Topics covered include fire management, groundcover restoration, herbicide treatments for restoration, mechanical management, use of silviculture in ecological restoration, and monitoring success and adaptive management.  The course includes some classroom lecture, case study presentations, group work, and field site visits.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Assess forested lands to determine their current status
  • Create feasible restoration goals tied to a stated desired future condition
  • Set objectives and choose management options to reach those goals
  • Use management practices to restore biological diversity to conservation lands

CEU's with Society of American Foresters (SAF) are available. Typically 10 CEU's are awarded.
