Restoration Planning and Techniques for Forested Lands
Date: April 14-16, 2009
Location: Apalachicola Bluffs and Ravines Preserve, BristolLearn best management practices for restoring ecological processes to forested lands. The focus of this workshop will be on the forested lands of northwest Florida, although methodology will be applicable to other areas in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. Topics covered will include fire management, groundcover restoration, herbicide treatments for restoration, mechanical management, use of silviculture in ecological restoration, and monitoring success and adaptive management. The course will include some classroom lecture, case study presentations, and field site visits. Flatwoods and sandhill will be the primary habitats featured.

Participants will learn how to:
- Assess forested lands to determine their current status
- Create feasible restoration goals tied to a stated desired future condition
- Set objectives and choose management options to reach those goals
- Use management practices to restore biological diversity to conservation lands
